The Science of Drying Heavy Fabrics

Many people assume their dryer's heating element is going bad. But the truth lies in how a dryer actually works. A dryer doesn't just "bake" your clothes; it evaporates the water and blows the moisture outside through the exhaust vent.

Lightweight fabrics like t-shirts and undergarments hold very little water. Even if your dryer vent is partially clogged, the machine can still push enough air through the restricted opening to carry away that small amount of moisture.

The "Partial Blockage" Symptom

Thick fabrics like bath towels, heavy jeans, and blankets hold a massive amount of water. To dry them, your dryer needs to push a huge volume of steam out of the house.

If your vent pipe is coated in lint or restricted by a crushed hose, the dryer simply cannot push all that heavy, moist air out fast enough. The steam gets trapped inside the drum with your towels. The machine shuts off when the timer ends, but your heavy items remain damp because the moisture had nowhere to go.

Why You Shouldn't Ignore It

Running your heavy clothes for two or three cycles is a massive waste of electricity and gas, spiking your utility bills. Even worse, leaving damp towels in a warm dryer breeds mildew, which is why your "clean" towels might have a musty odor.

More importantly, a partial blockage today will become a complete blockage tomorrow, leading to a dangerous fire hazard or a burnt-out dryer motor.
