How Often Should You REALLY Clean Your Dryer Vent?
If you ask a fire marshal, the standard answer is "once a year." While this is a great general rule, the reality is that your home is unique. Depending on your lifestyle, once a year might be perfect, or it might not be nearly enough to keep your home safe.
The Standard: Once a Year
For the average family of four doing 4 to 5 loads of laundry per week, an annual professional dryer vent cleaning is the sweet spot. It clears out the 12 months of accumulated lint, ensures the machine runs efficiently, and drastically reduces the risk of a dryer fire.
When Should You Clean Every 6 Months?
Some households generate significantly more lint and require bi-annual cleanings to maintain safety and efficiency. You should consider a 6-month schedule if:
- You Have a Large Family: If your dryer runs constantly (8+ loads a week), lint builds up twice as fast.
- You Have Pets: Dog and cat hair mixed with lint creates a thick, sticky blockage that clogs vents rapidly.
- You Have a Long Vent Run: If your dryer is in the middle of the house and the exhaust pipe travels 15+ feet through walls or the attic, the air pressure drops, causing lint to settle inside the duct much faster.
Can You Ever Wait Longer Than a Year?
If you live alone or with just one other person, do only 1 or 2 small loads of laundry a week, and your dryer is located on an exterior wall with a very short exhaust pipe (under 3 feet), you might be able to stretch your cleaning schedule to every 18 months. However, an annual visual inspection is still highly recommended to ensure birds haven't built nests in the exterior cover.
Don't Wait for the Warning Signs
No matter what schedule you are on, you should call a professional immediately if you notice clothes taking more than one cycle to dry, the top of the dryer getting extremely hot, or a burning smell in the laundry room. These are critical signs of a severe blockage.
