What is Your Exterior Vent Telling You? 5 Warning Signs Outside Your Home
When trying to figure out why their clothes are taking forever to dry, most homeowners immediately check the washing machine or the dryer drum. But the actual answer to the problem is usually waiting for you outside.
Taking a quick walk around the exterior of your house while the dryer is running can reveal critical warning signs of a clogged vent. Here is what you should be looking for.
1. The Flaps Aren't Opening
If you have a louvered exterior vent cover (the kind with plastic or metal flaps), those flaps should blow wide open when the dryer is running. This indicates strong, healthy airflow. If the dryer is on and the flaps are barely moving, shut tightly, or stuck open with a ball of lint, your system is severely restricted.
2. Lint on the Grass and Bushes
Your dryer vent should only expel warm, humid air. If you look down at the ground directly beneath your exterior vent and see a layer of grey "snow" (dryer lint) covering your grass, bushes, or patio, you have a problem. This means the internal ductwork is completely full, and the dryer's exhaust is now forcing excess lint outside.
3. Weak or No Hot Airflow
Hold your hand about 6 inches away from the exterior vent cover while the dryer is running on high heat. You should feel a strong, steady blast of hot air—similar to a hair dryer. If the air feels weak, cool, or if there is no air movement at all, the duct inside your walls is 100% blocked. Turn off the dryer immediately to prevent a fire.
4. Water Dripping Down the Siding
A normal load of laundry holds about half a gallon of water. That water turns into steam and exits through the vent. However, if the vent is clogged with lint, that steam gets trapped. In cold weather, it condenses back into water. If you see water dripping constantly from your exterior vent, or a large frozen icicle forming under it in the winter, your vent is choked.
5. High Bird or Pest Activity
Do you notice birds constantly flying to and from the side of your house, right around the vent area? The warm, sheltered exhaust pipe is the perfect spot for birds to build a nest. A nest inside the pipe will block 100% of the airflow and create an immediate fire hazard.
